The Popeye principle: Add Greens to increase your health now

Minerals are vital to our health. So what is the best way to get minerals? The best source is mineral-dense foods such as organic vegetables and sea and fresh water algae. Spinach, kale, broccoli and green beans are at the top of most lists. Popeye knew what he was doing!

When we get our minerals from foods (provided our digestion is working well) we are able to use them immediately. If we juice these same veggies or put them in a green smoothie our chances of rapid absorption go up considerably.

We actually only need miniscule amounts of minerals in our diet, not huge amounts as the vitamin manufacturers would have us think.

The real issues are:

  • Are the minerals present in the food to begin with?
  • How much do we absorb?

A mineral is not a usable until it has been incorporated into an organic matrix, which combines the minerals with oxygen, carbon and hydrogen. The miracle is that the plants do this conversion for us in the growth process! Eating rocks will not work for us humans!

Minerals taken in isolation are no more effective than licking a carpenter’s nail to get iron.

One very popular way to consume mineral rich greens is in a green smoothie. The simple formula is to take something green such as spinach or Kale and blend it with a frozen fruit.

You will need to use a powerful blender or you will end up with a runny salad with chunks you need to chew! It should be drinkable!

Basic green smoothie

2 cups kale or spinach
2 cups kale or water
2 cups coconut water
3 cups frozen pineapple/banana/blueberries/ strawberries/whatever you have on hand
¼ cup fresh mint leaves
Juice of 1 lime

1. Blend kale and coconut water until smooth.

2. Add remaining ingredients, and blend until smooth. Enjoy!

Mango Smoothie

2 cups fresh spinach
1 ½ cups water
2 cups frozen mango
1 orange, and water until smooth.
2. Add remaining ingredients, and blend until smooth. Enjoy!

*Use frozen fruit to make smoothie cold.

One of the challenges we are currently faced with is de-mineralisation of the soil due to farming practices and erosion. If the minerals are not in the soil it will not be in the food.

Therefore, organically grown veggies are your best option due to the way they farming is done. But that is a blog for another day. Eat or drink your organic veggies!
